A fresh cut from the recent Slim Deal sings ‘Red In Blue’ show.
Slim Deal is alive & touring, and keen to hear from you!
The first inaugural Bogan Funk Train Awards are being presented as part of the In Your Mind Funk Party. Everyone at 5Five are super excited about this, and the cool cats who helped us shoot this promo are hyped. Get ya treads ready!!
Slim Deal’s new show, ‘Slim Deal sings Red In Blue’ was launched in the backspace of crate59 Gallery/Billys Coffee in Cairns. This unused, derelict warehouse was the ideal space for Slim’s gritty, swamp-like art-blues musings. With a huge HD video score for each track, punters were taken on an sublime, moody and immersive journey.
Here’s Slim Deal performing ‘Evil’, the classic Willie Dixon song, recorded by Howling Wolf in 1953 (I think). Slim is a big Wolf fan…..
Sat 8th July > The Don Johnson/Butlers > DJ Declan James (pbs) > Miss & Mr Bogan Funk Awards 2018 > & guests
The world’s foremost purveyors of ‘bogan funk’ are about to launch their new International show to the world.
The Don Johnson/Butlers specialise in re-interpreting classic rock lyrics to iconic funk tracks from the 70’s & 80’s, in a live mash of the two disciplines.
In Your Mind is the new show featuring a fresh line-up, including former members of seminal indigenous band The Pad Boys, hot new tracks and dazzling special guests.
Forming in mid-2014, The DJB’s have played events such as Brisbane Fringe Festival, Wallaby Creek Festival, Millaa Milla Bogan Bash and the Deadroots Festival.
In Your Mind will be a strictly funk event, and punters are encouraged to dress funky to be in the running for Mr & Miss Bogan Funk 2018.
Joining the band will be one of Melbourne’s hottest funk DJ’s Declan James, from PBS FM. His how ‘The Mothership’, is infamous for classic, deep funk and groove from the 70’s till now.
The Don Johnson/Butlers present a wack show of lush funky grooves, hands-in-the-air rock lyrics, glitzy sequins, classic stubby shorts and more chutzpah than Lemmy at an 80’s block party.

Do you know Slim? He’s the real Deal!
From the dark deep north Queensland swamplands, amongst the mangroves of the tidal Moody Creek, emerges a new icon for a post-roots paradigm: Slim Deal.
Drawing from the catalogue of myth, personal experience, and local mystery, Slim captures classic art/blues stories, dripping with shadowy activities, sweaty characters and swampy riff’s.
Described as the “Wolf of Moody Creek” Slim Deal speaks the new truth – channeling old song-men through a musty, surreal, deep north lens.
Performed with a large HD video backdrop, a Slim Deal show takes punters on a immersive journey of intrigue, mystery and colour.
Drawing from naïve blues licks, sampled objects, traditional drums and electronics, the songs traverse a post-roots landscape, looped, lush and raw.
Slim Deal has just recorded his debut EP “Red In Blue” at 5Five Studio’s.

#VEHICLE – Currently in Creative Development
Currently in Creative Development, #Vehicle vision is to “develop a large scale performance and media work, both on site and in studio, based on the found #VEHICLE, its relationship to people and landscape”.
The #Vehicle is located next to Highway 81 on Cape York, near the Palmer River Roadhouse. The project will involve a creative development process in-situ, and then a further creative development in Cairns after transporting the #Vehicle.
The #VEHICLE, as a visual object and metaphor, reflects the people of Cape York’s need to travel and barriers to travel; #VEHICLE has also become part of the landscape; a weathered ‘rock like’ feature of the landscape, not alien.
Our new dig is really breaking rocks…….5Five
5Five is busy busy: we’ve just recorded some traditional songs by Markham Galut (PNG), while indigenous choreographer Tamara Pearson is working with the studio in recording and producing a soundtrack for a new community dance for this years 2017 Laura Dance Festival.
Meanwhile, The Don Johnson Butlers have been busy pre-producing their debut EP, and the dynamic Tegan Koster Project is tinkering away at her debut recording.
Also, art-blues songman Slim Deal is also recording his debut EP, “The red in blue…”
Stay tuned peoples, lot’s going on at the 5Five.
Our band The Don Johnson/Butlers are busy rehearsing and producing for our first recording foray. A quick snippet from last years Dead Roots Festival. Keep an ear to the ground for some fresh new work.
Sense/Place – new sound works produced by me (Nicholas Mills), as part of my solo exhibition of the same name – (Canopy Art Centre, Cairns, Aust. – 21 Apr-3rd May 2015).
These works were built from a body of sounds recorded during rehearsals and performances of the improvisation trio, The Presentation.
The source sounds were created live by me during The Presentation sessions (2014) at Arthouse, and there are a number of audio artifacts present on the recordings from sound collaborators, PNG artist Markham Galut (PNG drums, voice) and Kai Kabi Aboriginal man Darren Blackman (percussion, didgeridoo).
Sense/Place – Apr 21st – May 2nd
Canopy Art Centre – 124 Grafton St, Cairns. Opening: Tues 21st Apr, from 6.00pm >> live performance by Zane Saunders, Rebecca Youdell, and Darren Blackman with Nicholas Mills.
Kicked out of art school (Victoria College, Prahran) in the mid-80’s, Nicholas Mills has continued to express himself through a ‘painters lens’: applying this framework to a broad diversity of solo and collaborative outputs.
Sense/Place explores a series of personal threads that form a continuum in the maker’s life. Paired back from a larger body of work made over some 6 years, the video, sound works and paintings will present a very particular dichotomy: a sense of being embedded in the landscape, and yet distant.
