Arthouse – was an artist/producer run space, located in semi-industrial Upper Bungalow (Cairns, Far North Qld, Australia), that developed and celebrates contemporary culture in all its forms.
Arthouse aimed to foster and enable a healthy contemporary arts ecosystem, that sustains and stimulates local artists, and enables the critical development of new work.
The building was formerly the Croation community club, and includes an indoor venue/screen/exhibition room, outdoor grass area’s, and large sheds that house gallery walls, a tiki lounge, a large second stage and dj booth.
Arthouse runs the ongoing Mixed Grill series (multi-arts), the In/Off Club new music nights, the EAT Emerging Artist Program, and various once off events. It also acts as host for collective events, rehearsal room for performing artists and bands, and is a media studio for both in-house and external projects.
Arthouse produces the annual On Edge media & performance festival each year, and is a tour venue for a variety of music and sound art artists. It also co-produces the SNAP! Children and Young Artists Festival with KickArts Contemporary Arts.
It has been used to build staging for theatre, facades and gateways for festivals, floats for parades, installations for laneways and steel drums for the local pan group. It has recorded a number of local music acts, including Bunni & No_Request, and supports numerous artists with professional mentoring.
It nurtures a creative community through partnerships, open access, and critical networks.
